Migrations Quilt Sampler
This was a fun project to create. Since the book explores the breadth of applique, I wanted to create a sampler. I had been thinking of this concept for a while, and when approached by Casey, thought it the perfect opportunity for it! The Flying Geese block is a classic and favorite among modern and traditional quilters, alike. I wanted to show that iconic design using several different quiltmaking techniques. On the left we have a tidy, classic block, then as we move to the right, the goose transforms from the abstractly shaped geese into a more literally shaped "scrappy" goose! The goose on the left is pieced, the next over uses needle-turn applique, the next is raw-edge with a hand chain stitched finish (inspired by Casey York's fabulous hand embroidery in her applique), and the goose on the right uses my Scrappy Applique technique and has a machine satin stitch finish.I quilted it with a free-form leaf/feather-like motif and added a pop of color in a corner of the binding.
I loved contributing to this fabulous book, and I know you all will love it! If you want to add this lovely book to your library, you can purchase a signed copy here.

II have done a bit of appliquit. I think it is a valuable skill to have as you never know when you might need it!
I’ve done some raw-edge applique, and the type of applique in which you stitch the fusible and then turn it inside out. Now I’m ready to try needle-turn and your method—which really appeals to me in its collage-y-ness. I have a project going right now that cries out for applique, so I’ve been thinking a lot about how much I actually know about applique methods and what I want to learn. This book is right up my alley, as my dad would have said. :)
love applique! any which way it can be done! I’ve a few methods yet to try, but will eventually get there. my fave is raw edge so far, but I’ve yet to try trapunto. I had a hard time doing needle turn [arthritic hands]; I’ve worked more satin stitch quilts. thans for the opportunity to win a copy of this applique book.
I like doing a project once begun, but tend to put it off. Once I start I always wonder why I had been reluctant to start
