How to Organize Fabric in your Quilt Studio

How to Organize Fabric in your Quilt Studio

Collecting fabric is one of the most fun parts of being a quilter! But how do we organize and store our growing stash in a way that makes it tidy, easy to access, and visually appealing?

I'm taking you inside my studio and sharing the 2 ways I organize my fabric, including yardage, smaller cuts, scraps, and bolts.

I love for my fabric to be displayed (so I can enjoy all the color!), which is why I store it in furniture, but there are lots of different ways you can organize your stash.

The key things to keep in mind are:

  • The space you have available
  • easy access
  • easy put away (so you'll keep it organized!)

Now, I'd love to hear from you! How do you organize your fabric? Leave a comment below, and let us know!

Hi Shannon! Thank you for sharing how you organize your fabric! I love the idea of glass fronts so you can see everything. I have a cabinet with drawers that I think was meant for storing CDs that I use for my fat quarters. Another cabinet for storing larger cuts of fabrics – 1/2 yard +. Then plastic bins for strips, charms, and scraps. Thanks again for sharing!

Hi Shannon, I absolutely love your vintage furniture pieces… they are exactly my style. And even better is the fact that they have a history and belonged to family. Real treasures.

I’m in the process of reorganizing my sewing space and just purchased a new/coastal/beachy (I’m now living in FL) glass front armoire with shelves & drawers. I found it second hand on FB Marketplace & will pick it up next week. Yay! 😃 👏🏻 So excited. Thank you for sharing your ideas & space! xox

Thank you. There can never be too many organization tips. I recently was given a lot of yarn, so now I need to integrate my fabric stash in with my yarn. I love the idea of large jars to hold fabric scraps, but now also small balls of leftover yarn. I also like the idea of WIP baskets. I will try and see if that keeps my number of projects to 10 or less. Lol!
Anyway, thank you for your emails. Although I do not want to start a business your ideas are always useful and inspirational.

When you see a fabric or sale your would like to get for your stash, how much do you usually buy

I organize my fabric by color groups in large 2 door cabinets to protect from dust and mice….Orcas bedding down in it! Smaller scraps are in clear totes again by color grouping
