How to Organize Fabric in your Quilt Studio

How to Organize Fabric in your Quilt Studio

Collecting fabric is one of the most fun parts of being a quilter! But how do we organize and store our growing stash in a way that makes it tidy, easy to access, and visually appealing?

I'm taking you inside my studio and sharing the 2 ways I organize my fabric, including yardage, smaller cuts, scraps, and bolts.

I love for my fabric to be displayed (so I can enjoy all the color!), which is why I store it in furniture, but there are lots of different ways you can organize your stash.

The key things to keep in mind are:

  • The space you have available
  • easy access
  • easy put away (so you'll keep it organized!)

Now, I'd love to hear from you! How do you organize your fabric? Leave a comment below, and let us know!

I save those bags that fresh fruits or vegetables come in. They are about the size of a gallon ziploc bag, only they have holes in them and handles. I make my own little kits of coordinating fabric and keep them together in one of these bags.

I love your storage system! Just a quick question… what do you do about pre-cuts and collections? I am somewhat new to quilting, and am not at all confident at choosing my own fabrics, so I tend to stick with collections. Thoughts?

I like the idea of having glass doors. I have a a 10′×10′ sewing room which is getting over run with WIP, Fabric and other craft that I use to teach at local Rec centers. I like the idea of using a china cabinet. I recently had an upper kitchen cabinet remade to store my fat quarter size fabrics. I had wheels placed on it and modified the top to create an ironing board and hinged try where I store infrequent tools. I painted it but left the doors solid wood, I think I’ll have plexi glass put in the doors to allow me to see the fabric, and perhaps have the front doors put on “barn door” style to save floor space and avoid the doors swinging outward in such a tiny room. Thanks for the idea.

Shannon,
My work space is a box room. It includes sewing, art supplies, and Aromatherapy books, printer etc. I have a 6 drawer piece of beautiful furniture that holds most materials, a couple of boxes that hold more, rather disorganised. Presently clearing out 12 years of miscellaneous stuff.

what if you don’t have that much room any suggestions for a multipurpose room9 guest bedroom and sewing room?
